Sheffield United are through to the next round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy after winning 2-1 at Burton Albion tonight.
United were hoping to bring their winning league form into the competition and they did just that,
The Blades are joint top of League One and unbeaten in the third tier.
And they started showing that composure and control against a League 2 side which hasn’t done much to write home about so far this season.
Neill Collins looked most likely to break the deadlock for the visitors.
But Ryan Austin forced goalie George Long into a save as Albion started to express themselves.
Burton’s 30-year-old striker Justin Richards lit the blue touch paper with the game’s opening goal on 73 minutes.
But Blades hit back straight away.
David McAllister equalised on 76 minutes and on 80 minutes, United’s Norwegian substitute Erik Tonne scored a second.
Jordan had a chance to increase the lead, but in the end the one-goal margin was adequate.
Blades starting line up: Long, Lowton, Maguire, Collins, Mendez-Laing, McAlllister, Doyle, Flynn, Philliskirk, Slew, Porter.
Bench: Simonsen, Harriott, Conneely, Tonne, Parrino.
