TUESDAY NIGHT: Wednesday kiss FA Cup goodbye

SHEFFIELD Wednesday crashed out of the FA Cup 3-0 against Blackpool in the fourth round replay at Hillsborough tonight.

Blackpool now go on to meet Everton at Goodison Park a week on Saturday.

Wednesday had been installed as the bookmakers’ favourites for the encounter, yet midfielder Matt Phillips shot home from just outside the area.

Kevin Phillips got involved again six minutes later, helping in the build up as Congolese striker Lomana LuaLua flashed in an effort to the top right corner of the goal.

Blackpool, who have been in a decent run of form - they are unbeaten since the turn of the year, claiming five victories and two draws - had a comfortable amount of possession as the half wore on.

The referee cautioned Chris Sedgwick for unsporting behaviour, but at least the Owls were now starting to ask questions of the Seasiders, who are currently lying fourth in the Championship table.

No League One side has won more games from losing positions than Wednesday this season - but this certainly looked a tall order as the sides went to their dressing rooms at half time.

Reda Johnson, who was booked in the first half and misses the next two matches (but is available for the derby,) was replaced by Jose Semedo as the second session got underway.

Frenchman Ludovick Sylvestre made it three for Blackpool on 53 minutes with an exquisite curling finish from just inside the Wednesday box past Bywater.

The goal represented the difference in class between a third and second flight club.

And it put the Seasiders, who have not qualified for the fifth round in 22 years, in an unassailable position in front of the sparse Hillsborough crowd.

Blackpool’s loan (Glasgow) Ranger John Fleck - who has been a target for Sheffield United - came on for Kevin Phillips as the visitors looked for another. Matt Phillips almost got a fourth - it was now a very long night for the home faithful.

Attendance: 10,274.

TEAMS:

OWLS: Bywater, Otsemobor, Batth, R Jones, R Johnson, Sedgwick, Lines, Palmer, Bennett, Morrison, Lowe.

Subs: Weaver, Buxton, Semedo, Prutton, O’Grady, Beevers, Madine.

SEASIDERS: Gilks, Eardley, Wilson, Baptiste, Harris, Sylvestre, Martinez, Ince, M Phillips, LuaLua, K Phillips.

Subs: Halstead, Bruna, Taylor-Fletcher, Basham, Fleck, Djordjic.

Ref: D’Urso.

Halifax Tang. We did the double over you when we got relegated from Championship so you can't be thet good eh? Don't worry your flash in the pan Fame for 15 minutes will soon be over. As for us, well it has to be said that things are looking up for us. Good luck when the wage capping comes in, I'm sure the revenue from your 10,000 fans will go a long way with the wage bill. We might be league 1 but our crowds dwarf yours, even the crowds you got in Prem. Oh and good luck at Goodison, you'll need it.LMFOA. OTO

Well done Blackpool & Wednesday. It was a very professional game with both sides getting what they set out to achieve. Ollie fielded a strong side who were determined to play Everton in the next round. Gary did not. There were a handful of Owls who tried to spoil the result, Batth, Lines, Sedgwick, Clinton, Semedo & Reda, but their determination was not matched by their skill more often than not, although Reda did manage to win a booking. UTFO!

Sheffield. Sad City with two Sad Football teams and perhaps the worst fans forums in Britain, infested by schoolboys and pathetic adults who should know better [I know I'm one myself]. I would have thought that supporters would have grabbed the last chance this season to see even a half reasonable team play in Sheffield--but then do we watch football or watch the Owls & Blunts ?--There is a difference. But with football being destroyed by "celebrity" referees who believe they are part of the game, rules that prohibit contact and mardy players who run to the Courts if they get shouted at, no wonder football is just a sport for school girls in the USA.

@32 tangerinehead. Our cup final, don't make me laugh. You had your cup final when we came, a massive 14,000 and highest crowd of the season. You come to us and we get 10,000, our lowest by a mile. It must be nice for you to finally beat us after so many attempts. Oh and as for the importance of it all, neither team stand a chance against Everton and we don't really need the gate receipts so spend it wisely. Next years spending cap should see you where your support deserves, staring relegation in the face.

Result expected, fair play Wendy are still making a good go of promotion. HOWEVER, every Wendy must be very red faced at that crowd? You can say it was cold (ah ah !) or it was on telly. It was £10 to get in for christ sake. Every Wendy posting must be doing so with a red face.
