LIFE after Andy Scott got off to the best possible way for Rotherham United, as they edged out Macclesfield 4-2, writes Ricky Charlesworth.

The Millers kept alive their faint play-off hopes with goals from Mark Bradley, Ben Pringle, Alex Revell and Kieran Cadogan in a goal-drenched clash at the Don Valley Stadium which keeps them within eight points of the top seven.

Millers caretaker manager Darren Paterson made two changes to the side which lost at Oxford at the weekend. Lewis Grabban and Danny Harrison bowed out of the team and were replaced by Kieran Cadogan and Danny Schofield.

Macclesfield themselves were starting their first match under new boss Brian Horton who joined the club on Monday. Horton, who replaced Gary Simpson, stuck faith with Sheffield Wednesday loanee Richard O’Donnell in the Silkmen’s goal.

It was Rotheram who started brighter, with Gareth Evans attempt from outside the area going just over before Ben Pringle’s tentative effort flew wide of the goal. The Millers breakthrough finally came seven minutes before the break, with Mark Bradley heading home for his first goal of the campaign.

After the break, Rotherham doubled their lead, with Pringle firing home from inside the area. It was the midfielder’s third goal of the campaign and at 2-0 up and cruising, United were shocked when the visitors pulled one back. Matt Smith headed home from close range to reduce the arrears but it wasn’t long before the Millers restored their two-goal advantage.

Alex Revell scored his first goal in ten when he fired home from the edge of the area, before Macclesfield once again replied. This time a foul by Bradley in the box led to a penalty, and Lewis Chalmers slotted home to make it 3-2.

With the visitors now stepping up momentum, the Millers finally killed any nerves and ensured the win, when Cadogan blasted home in the area past O’Donnell to seal a happy evening at the DVS.
