Wood fit for tough test

RICHARD Wood today declared himself fit for the start of a big test of Wednesday's strength.

The Owls skipper confirmed that he has recovered from the knee injury that sidelined him for last week's 2-0 win against Crystal Palace.

He is challenging to return at Burnley on Saturday as the club embark on a run of four games against top-eight teams: the others are Reading, Wolves and Preston.

The centre half said: "Burnley are a good side and the next few games are going to be a good test for us. We'll see how strong our squad is at the moment. It will be a useful marker for us. Last Saturday's result means we'll go to Burnley with confidence."

With the victory against Palace after two defeats, he said: "If we had gone into these big games without any points from the last three, there would have been a bit of pressure on us. We'll go into this spell with confidence."

Wood and Lewis Buxton, who has served a one-match ban, compete for places in a back four that last week included comeback aces Richard Hinds and Frankie Simek.

The skipper said: "I think the back four did very well. There is competition for places, which is good. I'm fit, I definitely want to play."

His knee problem was only bruising rather than a strain: "I tried it last Saturday morning and couldn't run properly. I came in on Monday and the swelling had gone down a bit . It was like a balloon at first."
