Whole-hearted Batth set for influential Owls role
YOU get the feeling Danny Batth is going to be a pivotal player in the coming weeks for Sheffield Wednesday.
The rugged, no-nonsense defender is not afraid to stick his head in where it hurts, gives his all for the cause and, currently, is in terrific form.
The Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee is selected at centre back following his superb showing at Blackpool. He stood firm throughout and it took a controversial penalty to deny the Owls from dumping the Championship side out of the FA Cup.
I have paired Batth in the middle with Neal Trotman, who was outstanding for Chesterfield on Friday night as the strugglers registered their first home victory since September.
Matthew Lowton gets in at right back while I’ve selected Rotherham United’s Scott Griffiths on the opposite flank. Tommy Lee, having helped Chesterfield record their first clean sheet in 25 matches in the 1-0 victory over Bournemouth, is selected in between the sticks.
Scottish midfielder Kevin McDonald certainly did not look out of place in Sheffield United’s 4-0 defeat to Birmingham City, who were in the top flight a year ago and are the reigning Carling Cup holders. He oozed class and composure at the heart of the midfield engine room. He is partnered by Chris Lines, who produced an industrious display at Bloomfield Road.
While results may not be going Rotherham’s way, Kieron Cadogan offered the Millers hope on debut, showing confidence and skill in possession on the right flank as he troubled Dagenham and Redbridge’s back four. Drew Talbot completes the quartet.
Up front, Alex Revell took his tally to eight for the season by scoring his second goal in three outings and is alongside Clinton Morrison.
