Sheffield Wednesday v Tranmere.....Owls Ben Marshall

WEDNESDAY are scanning the transfer market for another winger who can step in if they are unable to extend Ben Marshall’s stay.

Marshall’s future remains in doubt with talks on a new Stoke contract unresolved and permission refused for him to play in the Owls’ FA Cup tie against West Ham tomorrow.

Manager Gary Megson still hopes that Marshall be will be able to stay beyond January 15, when his current loan ends, but confirmed that contingency plans are being laid.

“We do look all over the show,” he said. “Hopefully we can get Ben sorted. We might be able to try to buy him; that may be an option. There are other players who might fall into that category - we would like to try and buy them if we’re given any finance, or we have to try to loan somebody else, but loaning in January is very, difficult, if not impossible, and we need to get somebody in who’s capable of a seamless continuation of what we’ve been doing so far.

“We’re second in the table, we’re in the third round of the FA Cup and we’ve got that momentum. We need to find someone who fits into the right category, plus be one we can afford.”

Megson admires Huddersfield left winger Gary Roberts, who was a target in the summer, but it is doubtful whether the Terriers would let him go to promotion rivals even if the Owls could afford him.

Megson would also like to sign a right winger, after James O’Connor’s departure. “We’ve been playing with full-backs or midfield players playing outside right near enough throughout the season,” he said.
