Wednesday derby injury scare for in-form JJ
WEDNESDAY today begin the final countdown to the Sheffield derby with a worry about Jermaine Johnson.
An assessment is due to be carried out today on the knee problem that forced him off in the 25th minute of the Chesterfield game.
Early indications were that he has suffered a ligament injury - which if confirmed could rule him out of the Hillsborough clash with United on Sunday.
Gary Megson said it was a “massive” blow when he had to go off on Saturday. Johnson has been the Owls’ main threat in recent games and has scored four top-class goals.
Megson said the initial diagnosis from the club’s medical team was a medial ligament issue: “We’ll see how bad it is once it settles down,” said the Owls boss. “JJ had set off really well. He looked a threat. He closed down, and he created a chance. He’s on top of his game. Fingers crossed it (the injury) is not as bad as it could be.”
Megson felt that a failure to score when they were on top was key to the Owls’ 1-0 setback at Chesterfield - their third successive league defeat: “We started brilliantly. The only criticism I could level is that we didn’t score. You just have to kick on and get better at taking chances.
“It’s just about one thing - that is winning games, and we ain’t. We were probably no different from how we played against Chesterfield at Hillsborough (in a 3-1 win), except that in that we scored and in this we didn’t.”
He added: “We just keep plugging away. It doesn’t matter whether you’re going for automatic promotion, trying to get into the top six or trying to avoid relegation, you have to try to win games.”
Chesterfield boss John Sheridan said Wednesday and United are “evenly matched.” He added: “We were right in the games against Charlton, Huddersfield and United, though we lost.
“I wouldn’t pick any team and say they’re better than any of the others. They’re all strong teams who are up there on merit.”

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 08:52 PMAnyway, back to football: my prediction for Sunday is a scrappy draw. Wednesday will be pumped up, despite the best efforts of their uninspiring manager. The combination of a narrow pitch and McDonald injured means the Blades' flowing, passing game will be nullified. It will be a war of attrition which will suit Wednesday.
