Wednesday boss is still learning after all these years
GARY Megson is an experienced manager but he feels that he is still learning.
Working with a hands-on chairman and vice-chairman in Milan Mandaric and Paul Aldridge has been something new for the Owls boss.
It has also been the first time that he has been so heavily involved in the loan market.
Around 10 senior loan signings have been utilised during his reign: Danny Batth, Rob Jones, Joey O’Brien, Ben Marshall, David McGoldrick, Stephen Bywater, James Tavernier, Miguel Llera, Sanchez Watt and John Bostock.
Jones, Bywater and Llera subsequently became full signings on frees.
The Owls have also utilised the main transfer market, which Megson prefers, spending around £535,000 on Chris O’Grady, Ryan Lowe, Chris Lines and Mike Jones, and bringing in around £400,000 from the sales of Tommy Spurr and Michael Morrison.
Megson said: “There’s been a different way of working, from my point of view; there’s a lot of interaction with Milan and Paul. Although I’m 52 and have been working as a manager for 16-17 years, you’re still learning and picking up different ways of approaching the job.”
Megson says his relationship with Mandaric is all right.
“He hates losing games. Nobody likes losing. There are times when it doesn’t go your way,” he said.
“This season there has been one game where I was absolutely fuming, at Stevenage (a 5-1 defeat), at the way we went about it.
“The other defeats have come through technical misgivings; if want to sort those out, you need better players.
“Stevenage was a real low point.
“In terms of working with Milan, he’s okay.
“He wants to win. He has his opinions. You get on with it.”
Wednesday’s interest in Ferrie Bodde has been ended, with the Swansea midfielder breaking down in a reserve game with a serious knee injury.
