SHEFFIELD Wednesday’s out-of-contract players will be told officially next week of the club’s decision on their futures.
Five have deals that expire this summer: Jermaine Johnson, Tommy Miller, James O’Connor, Lewis Buxton and Richard Hinds.
Manager Gary Megson promises that the process will be “very quick” once the final game of the season, against Exeter tomorrow, is out of the way.
He said: “The players need to know what the position is. We will speak to them.”
Megson said recently that Johnson would be be getting an offer of a new deal but needed to improve certain aspects of his game. The Owls boss refuses to discuss what may happen with loan players Neil Mellor, Danny Batth and Rob Jones:
“They will go back to their clubs, then we’ll see if anything happens with them in the future,” he said.
Batth and Jones have formed a solid partnership at centre-back, and Megson admitted: “I’ve been impressed with what they’ve done. They have tightened us up immeasurably at the back.
“They’re both terrific lads, both strong in the air, which you need in this division.
“I won’t talking about what we’re going to do or not do with either player, because they’re not Sheffield Wednesday players.
“One plays for Scunthorpe, one plays for Wolves, and it would be wrong of me to start talking about their players.”
Megson will adopt the same stance with Mellor, on loan from Preston. Another loanee, Joey O’Brien, has returned to Bolton to continue his rehabilitation after a groin niggle.
Megson and Player of the Year Mellor will learn today whether they have won the League One manager and player awards for April.
