Whenever a team with Shefki Kuqi in their ranks face Wednesday then it is the former Owls striker who tends to be a centre of attention.

But Gary Megson’s men will be equally on guard against his front line partner, Robbie Simpson, at Oldham today.

Kuqi has scored 13 goals for the Latics but Simpson has been a key man.

He is joint top of the League One assist table and leads his local newspaper’s Star Player rankings.

The 26-year-old will also be bidding to put on an eye-catching farewell performance - today’s clash at Boundary Park will be the last of a three-month loan spell before he rejoins Huddersfield, who visit Hillsborough next Saturday.

Oldham manager Paul Dickov has appeciated Simpson’s contribution though he has scored only four goals - including a hat-trick in a 5-2 win against Chesterfield last month.

Dickov said after a recent game: “If he keeps putting in performances like that, I don’t care if he scores or not.”

Simpson is thought to have no future at Huddersfield, and Dickov wants to take him back to Oldham in January.

Nothing can be done before then because, like Wednesday keeper Stephen Bywater, he is on an emergency loan and the maximum permitted length is 93 days.

Meanwhile, the Owls’ home FA Cup tie against West Ham has been confirmed for Sunday, January 8, kick-off 3pm.

Gary Megson has been pipped for the second successive month for the League One Manager of the Month award, losing out to Huddersfield’s Lee Clark for October and Charlton’s Chris Powell for November.

Charlton’s former Owls defender, Michael Morrison, is November’s League One Player of the Month.
