SHEFFIELD Wednesday manager Gary Megson has confirmed an attempt to sign Charlton’s Portuguese midfield player Jose Semedo.

It follows speculation about the Owls and the 26-year-old whose contract is coming to an end.

Megson also disclosed that a Championship club have shown interest in Tommy Spurr and admitted that a bid for Dagenham and Redbridge right winger Danny Green has been rejected.

The Owls boss recently travelled to London for talks with Semedo, who has also been offered a new deal by Charlton.

The Addicks’ Player of the Year has emerged as one of the targets identified by Megson to chairman Milan Mandaric and vice-chairman Paul Aldridge.

Megson told The Star: “He is a good player; I’d like to do something with him; it’s in the hands of Milan and Paul.”

It has yet to be revealed whether or not the Owls will make another bid for Green, who has also been linked with Peterborough and Coventry. He has two years left on his contract.

Spurr’s Hillsborough future looks in doubt with Mandaric reported to have said that the left back will be moving on.

Megson said: “Tommy wasn’t involved towards the end of the season.

“We will have some players available. There has been interest in Tommy from a Championship club.

“The only thing I will say is that if we don’t change anything, then nothing’s going to change. The club needs a huge amount of changes on and off the field.

“The first thing you have to do is to change the first-team ethos and hopefully the results and try to get the place kick-started.”

Charlton - who last week appointed Paul Hart as academy director - have said that Semedo is in the driving seat: “Of course we’d love to keep him,” said manager Chris Powell.. “He’s a very good player and always gives his all.”

Semedo was a centre-half when he was signed on a free from Sporting Lisbon four years ago but has made a defensive midfield role his own and become a favourite of the Addicks fans.

didn't megson make a point of saying he had 9 targets all of whom were english? don't mind who we sign as long as they can play and so a good job for the cause, but why make statements that are not true?
