Watson will be a leader

WEDNESDAY'S new club captain Steve Watson feels that he faces a fight for a place next season.

But his self-belief has been boosted by the end-of-season part he played in helping the team to stay up with victories against Leicester and Norwich.

He is delighted to succeed Lee Bullen as club skipper and feels he has a part to play on and off the field.

"When injuries had kept resurfacing last season it made me think, but the last two or three games reignited my belief that I could be a be a big influence" says the 34-year-old who accepts that competition for places will be tough though he can play in various positions.

"We've signed a couple of lads in midfield; the back four looks formidable when everybody is fit.

"I'm honest enough to admit I'm not going to play every week. But everybody's aim in pre-season is to get as fit as possible and be in the starting line-up for the first game, and I'm no different.

"We still have a very small squad and, as we showed at Leicester, we are capable of adopting different formations, and perhaps using a system that has three or four midfield players.."

It is the first time in his five-club career that Watson has become a club captain: "It's a role that's usually filled by an experienced player, because there's more to it than football. I'm there to help the young players, and to speak on behalf of the players.

"Having a club captain alongside him will also help Richard Wood to keep on being a very good team captain and concentrate on what happens on the pitch. He did a great a job last season. I think he deserves to be team captain, and I'm chuffed to bits for him."

A Wednesday XI will visit Dinnington Town tomorrow. The match at Phoenix Park, kicks-off at 7.45pm.
