Fernando Forestieri pout the Owls in front against Preston North End but was then sent off for an altercation with Ben Pearson.

Steven Fletcher came off the bench to double the lead from the penalty spot after Will Buckley had been hauled down by North End keeper Chris Maxwell.

Former Spireite Eoin Doyle entered the fray and pulled one back for Preston with his first touch but then he and team mate Jermaine Beckford were sent off for fighting with each other, killing off any chance of the visitors completing a comeback.

On the negative side for Wednesday, in-form Ross Wallace and Glenn Loovens both had to come off injured in the first half.
