VIDEO: Three things Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal must learn from Owls' trip to Portugal

Sheffield Wednesday jetted out to Faro, Portugal, to kick off their five-day training camp yesterday.

With just over a fortnight to go until the new Championship season gets underway, the Owls squad are being put through their paces in the searing heat in the Algarve.

As part of their warm-weather training, Carlos Carvalhal's side will take on CD Nacional in a friendly this Sunday followed by a training exercise with fellow Portuguese outfit Portimonense on Monday.

Here are three things Carvalhal must learn from the trip:

1) How to get the best out of new signing Steven Fletcher

The Scotland international has only had one run-out so far, playing in the second half of Wednesday's draw at Alfreton Town last week. He and Gary Hooper will be short of match fitness so can expect lengthy run-outs in Wednesday's two matches. Big things are expected of Fletcher, who boasts an impressive CV, but the Owls have got to quickly work out how to play to his strengths.

2) Where to play Fernando Forestieri

Carvalhal has an embarrassment of riches up front, with Forestieri, Hooper, Fletcher, Atdhe Nuhiu and Lucas Joao all pushing for starting spots. Will Fletcher's arrival mean that Forestieri shifts to the left flank on a more permanent basis? Or will Wednesday's top-scorer from last season continue to play in his favoured number 10 position? Forestieri is Wednesday's main man so it is crucial they play him where he can inflict maximum punishment on the opposition.

3) Are Wednesday's young players good enough to step up?

Carvalhal has fielded a number of youngsters throughout their pre-season programme, including Jack Lee, Connor O’Grady, Jack Stobbs and George Hirst. Carvalhal is pleased with their development and rewarded Lee, Stobbs and Hirst by bringing them to Portugal. The next few days provide a good platform for Lee, Stobbs and Hirst to underline their potential. Carvalhal clearly rates them highly and has not ruled out giving youth a chance this season. He said: "I will judge them on their quality and not their age."
