Carlos Carvalhal, the Owls head coach, is refusing to panic despite his side’s poor run of form.

Wednesday have gone four matches without a win following Saturday’s shock home loss to South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United.

Matt Derbyshire’s first half strike ended the Owls’ 16-match undefeated run at Hillsborough in all competitions and leaves them clinging on to the final Championship play-off position. With 11 matches remaining, they are level on points with seventh-placed Cardiff City but are above the Welsh club only on goal difference.

However, Birmingham City and Ipswich Town trail Carvalhal’s side by just a point and have a game in hand.

Carvalhal, who takes his side to fourth-placed Brighton and Hove Albion tomorrow night, told The Star: “We are still fighting and will react very fast for the next game. We will be with a strong team.

“We lose just one game. We are still fighting in the competition.”

The Portuguese head coach is optimistic Sam Hutchinson could be included in the match-day squad for the promotion tussle with Brighton. He was rested versus the Millers, having yet to fully shake off his knee problem.

“All the time Sam has small things and needs time to recover,” he said. “We think he can recover for the next match.”

Striker Fernando Forestieri will complete the second of his two-match suspension for his sending off at Hull City.
