Carlos Carvalhal, the Sheffield Wednesday boss, has explained why he decided to drop Atdhe Nuhiu for their draw at home to Hull City.

Despite being the Owls’ joint top scorer, Nuhiu was left out of the starting line-up against the Tigers, with Carvalhal choosing Lucas Joao to partner Fernando Forestieri up front.

“Hull play differently to other teams in the Championship,” said Carvalhal. “They play with three strong midfielders and we needed two players in attack who are powerful to try to press the centre-backs and, at the same time, try to protect the centre of midfield.

“Nuhiu has special abilities. He has got more height, keeps the ball and wins the first balls but we felt we needed two more players with pace. Forestieri and Joao have more pace than Nuhiu.”

Joao showed glimpses of his undoubted talent before being replaced by ex-Austrian Under-21 international Nuhiu with 20 minutes left.

Carvalhal, who confirmed Alex Lopez will miss tomorrow’s trip to Queens Park Rangers after picking up an injury in training, said: “I am happy with how are three attackers did. It is not easy to play against Fernando because he is a good technical player.

“We are in a good way. That was a positive step. I am very happy with how the players did.”

Hull was the first of seven fixtures in the space of three weeks for the Owls. The hectic period includes three matches in six days this week, but Carvalhal has no qualms over the busy schedule.

“Myself and the players prefer to play than train,” he stressed. “If the other teams are playing the same amount of games as us then that is fantastic.

“When I managed Besiktas, I was unhappy with the schedule as we played more games in a shorter time to other teams, but here it is well organised and fair for every team.”
