Sam Winnall is in the frame for a first-team recall when Wednesday head to Bolton Wanderers in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.
The striker was not included in the Owls’ match-day squad against Fulham last weekend as boss Carlos Carvalhal rotated his forward line. Steven Fletcher partnered Gary Hooper in attack in the capital.
Winnall’s surprise omission came a week after his impressive scoring cameo against Queens Park Rangers and only a few days after he led the line versus Sunderland.
Carvalhal said: “He was not involved because we have a lot of attackers. We picked the attackers we felt we needed, understanding all the scenarios in the game.
“We knew if we came to the last 10 minutes and we were winning that we need a player like Atdhe Nuhiu on the bench. Not just in attack to keep the ball but also in defence to help a lot at set-pieces. He’s an important player.”
Carvalhal hinted Winnall, who was recently involved in a training-ground spat with Fernando Forestieri, could return to action at the Macron Stadium.
“Sam is a team worker,” said Carvalhal.
“I’m very happy with him and the character he has and the way he plays.
“Of course, nobody is happy when they aren’t in the team and I understand that but that is the life. With Lucas [Joao], I have seven strikers so it is not easy.”
