Super Sedgwick tipped by boss for fast return

WEDNESDAY manager Alan Irvine is banking on Chris Sedgwick's toughness to earn the winger a place in the side at Brentford on Sunday.

Irvine recalls how Sedgwick once came back from a double hernia operation in nine days when they were both at Preston.

It was knowledge of the wide man's tenacity that led to the Owls chief keeping him on the field until the 38th minute of the JP Trophy match against Notts County though he was feeling a groin problem.

Irvine knows that the ex-Rotherham star will be desperate to play on Sunday and maintain his ever-present record in Wednesday league matches.

The Owls boss explained: "Sedgy is the type of player who wants to play and train all the time.

"You have to drag him off the training ground and the pitch at times."

Irvine just hopes that keeping Sedgwick on for so long on Tuesday did not affect his chances for Sunday.

"Right from the early stages, he was feeling his groin. It was getting tighter as the match was going on," he said.

"It wasn't really affecting the way he and (full-back) Jon Otsemobor were playing down the right-hand side.

"I didn't really want to break that up; I delayed it and delayed it; hopefully that hasn't done any harm."

Irvine felt that Sedgwick was missed at first, after he went off on Wednesday, but that sub Tommy Miller did a good job on the right side of midfield once he had found his feet there.

Neither Giles Coke nor Tommy Spurr was in the 16 for the Notts County match but both could play at Brentford.

Cokes was rested because of a slight ankle niggle, but Spurr was not carrying any injury.

Irvine explained: "Tommy has been terrific; I wanted Daniel Jones to get a chance.

"Tommy's not happy at the moment as he's not figured in the 16.

"He understands, I'm sure. His attitude is top class and he's a very important player for us."
