A Sheffield Wednesday side filled with trialists and youngsters alongside first team squad members slipped to defeat at non-league Stocksbridge.
Wednesday fielded a team including Mark Beevers, James O’Connor, Mark Reynolds and trialists Padraig Amond and Rudy Saintini but came adrift in the rain at Bracken Moor.
The Owls had the best of the first half and almost went in front on 20 mins when Amond dragged a shot wide of the far post after a poor defensive back header. Vadaine Oliver was equally unlucky, leaning back and half-volleying wide from an O’Connor corner.
On 42 mins Amond had a header cleared in front of goal by Steels defender Kevin Dawson. Steels looked better in the closing minute, taking the lead on 76 mins when Junior Johnson (Jermaine’s brother) drilled in a low cross from the left which was turned into his own net by defender Ayo Obileye. Steels wrapped it up with a super goal from Mark Ward, a curled 23-yard free kick.
