Soares seeks goal repeat
MEMORIES of a solo goal at Hillsborough are inspiring Tom Soares to seek similar scoring prowess in his loan spell with the Owls.
His stunning, one-man effort was for Crystal Palace and comprised a dribble past several opponents in the box followed by a clinical finish.
It happened three years ago and his team lost 3-2 but the midfield player brought it to mind as he got set to face West Brom today:.
"I remember that goal . . . a little dribble. I like to get into the box and score goals and create things. Hopefully I will bring something different."
Soares has played against Wednesday seven times in the last four years - six times for Palace and once while on loan from Stoke to Charlton - but is now delighted to be on their side.
He prefers to play in central midfield but feels comfortable on either flank and played all 10 of his loan games for Charlton last season on the wing.
"This is really good loan move for me, to a big club," said the 23-year-old who was born in Reading and moved to London when he was 15.
"I need to play football and get fit; hopefully I'll help the team to push up the table.
"I know Wednesday are a big team, with a great fan base; they like to play football and pass it around
"Obviously results haven't been going so well but hopefully we can climb the table."
Soares has had only one training session with the Owls so it is not certain that he will start today, but in signing him and Cardiff striker Warren Feeney, Brian Laws has one eye on a busy December.
Former England Under 21 man Soares added: "There are going to be a lot of games over the Christmas period. Hopefully we can achieve a lot: climb the table and start challenging for the play-offs.
"It's going to be a tough game against West Brom; they have been doing really well. It's going to be a good challenge for the boys, but hopefully we can get three points."
Soares has been forced to seek first-team football away from Stoke partly because of the form there of ex-Owls star Glenn Whelan.
"Glenn has been doing really well," he said. "When I first got there he was having a tough time and not getting in the team but he worked really hard to get in and has done well."
