Simek starts long way back

FRANKIE Simek is refusing to set himself a Championship comeback target after making a long-waited return last night.

The Owls right-back played for the first-half in the Reserves' 4-0 win against Bradford at Stocksbridge.

He and manager Brian Laws are non-committal about his chances of being ready for the Sheffield derby. "I'm not going to say yes or no," said Simek.

"Last season, after I was injured, I was saying I'd be back for the home derby but I wasn't and I was frustrated.

"I don't know when I'll be back. I'm taking it day by day. I know Sheffield United is the next game but after that, I don't know what the schedule is."

His next appearance could be in the Reserves next week. He said: "I don't know what the plan is. I'll be having a word with the gaffer and the physio. It's good to be back playing. Forty-five minutes is a good start. The physio didn't want me to play any longer than that. It's a good start. I'll push on from there."

Laws, who watched from the stand, said: "We're really pleased with Frankie's progress. He looked sharp in parts of his game and rusty in others. There are no deadlines for him. When he's ready, he'll be in the team."

The Owls boss is also relieved that Tommy Spurr's ankle injury is less serious than at first thought and is refusing to give up hope completely of him being fit for the derby. "We expect him to be out for two to four weeks, depending on how quick a healer he is. I had thought it could be four to six, so this is a positive."
