Sheffield Wednesday: Zayatte could be set for French return

Had things turned out differently, Sheffield Wednesday and RC Lens could have become intrinsically linked.

All Hafiz Mammadov needed to do was stump up the cash after shaking hands with Milan Mandaric on a deal to buy the Owls last summer.

If the deal was done, Wednesday would have joined Lens in the Azerbaijani’s stable of clubs.

But the funds never appeared, the deal was cancelled and, given Mammadov’s reported subsequent financial issues which have seen Lens relegated to Ligue 2, the Owls dodged the proverbial bullet.

There could still be a slight link between Wednesday and Lens this summer however with Kamil Zayatte reportedly close to agreeing a switch to the northern France outfit.

Zayatte earlier this month was released by the Owls after two years and 26 appearances for the club.

And he admits he is open to a return to Lens, where he started his professional career after moving from his native Guinea.

“It may be possible because it is a club [Lens] that is really close to my heart,” Zayatte told a news organisation in Guinea.

“Even in Ligue 2, I’m ready to return to Lens.

“I never played in France. I want to show everyone that I left too early and that I can play in Ligue 2 or Ligue 1.

“I have links in England and France but I don’t want to rush my decision.”
