Boss Carlos Carvalhal is convinced the Owls are on the up under his leadership, insisting he has changed things “for the better” in his five months in charge.

The Owls go into tomorrow’s Yorkshire derby with Huddersfield Town sitting ninth in the Championship table on the back of just one defeat in 12 matches in all competitions.

Carvalhal, who will be without the services of influential midfield duo Sam Hutchinson and Barry Bannan, is satisfied with their progress

“In my opinion, a lot of things have changed for the better here,” he said. “We are playing better and have players in national teams. Other clubs are starting to talk about our players.

“We have played fantastic in most of the games, playing positive football, and our fans are happy. Everything is in a good way. I am very happy with what we have done. I am happy and proud.”

Nonetheless, the Portuguese head coach is refusing to get carried away despite making Wednesday a difficult side to beat in the opening third of the campaign.

“There are a lot of things we need to improve which we can’t do in two weeks or four months,” he insisted. “They take a lot of time.

“It all depends on the patience of the players, the fans and the chairman of the club. But me and other coaches cannot produce magic.”
