Tom Lees says Wednesday must quickly adapt to the difficult conditions on the Hillsborough pitch if they are to get back on track.

The playing surface at S6 has come in for strong criticism over the last few weeks, particularly following Saturday’s defeat to Bolton Wanderers.

While admitting conditions are far from ideal for the Owls’ style of play, Lees refuses to use that as an excuse for the defeat.

“I think it’s fair it’s been said the pitch was in poor condition,” Lees said.

“I don’t think it helps us.

“I think away from home you’ve seen we’re a team that likes to get the ball down, play it quickly and move the ball forward quickly to our wingers or into the forwards.

“It wasn’t as easy to do that.

“But I know the manager has said we can’t use it as an excuse and he’s right about that.”

The Owls defender says there are lessons to be learned about the state of the pitch from the 2-1 defeat to Bolton.

In particular he pointed to the build-up to the Trotters’ first goal through Liam Feeney.

He said: “The first goal at the weekend showed we might have to be more careful about the areas we play in.

“It’s obviously going to be more difficult if you’re a midfielder coming to get the ball off the back four.

“The pitch is very sticky.

“It’s something we’ve got to get used to and find a way about being affective on that pitch.

“It’s about us knowing when to play and when not to play.”

The Owls have been heavily linked with a loan move for young Manchester United striker Will Keane.

The 22-year-old has been tipped to sign on loan for the rest of the season.

Keane was expected to break through into the first team set up at Old Trafford before a knee injury derailed his career.

The England U21 international had spells with Wigan and Queens Park Rangers last season, making a handful of appearances and failing to find the net.

Former Owls loanee Royston Drenthe reportedly completed his permanent move to Turkish side Erciyesspor last night.
