Joe Wildsmith claims Sheffield Wednesday have sent out a warning to the rest of the Championship following their positive start to the season.

Carlos Carvalhal’s troops head to Ipswich Town this Saturday on the back of two home victories against Bristol City and Mansfield Town.

It is early days but young Owls goalkeeper Wildsmith believes the team are well equipped to mount a concerted promotion push.

He told The Star: “There’s a real feel-good factor around the club.

“Everyone’s spirits are high and that’s what you need to basically go for promotion and hopefully we can push for it this season. There’s no reason why we can’t after the start we have had. We have looked solid. It’s in our hands.

“With the start we have had, we have told teams around us that we are not going to mess about this year and that they need to up their game if they are going to beat us.”

Wildsmith, an England Under-20 international, is confident the Owls can pick up a positive result against an Ipswich side who finished in the play-off positions last season.

He admitted: “It will be a tough game. Ipswich did really well last year and Mick McCarthy’s teams are tough to play against. I’m sure we will do the best we can, prepare right and hopefully get a win.”

Carvalhal rotated his squad versus the Stags, deciding to field Wildsmith in between the sticks and rest Wednesday number one Keiren Westwood.

“Westy came in and saw me on the day of the game and asked me how I was feeling and told me to enjoy it,” said Wildsmith. “He and Andy Rhodes were brilliant with me and kept me calm and didn’t put any pressure on me.”
