Everton have moved to distance themselves from speculation linking them with a move for Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood.

In recent weeks, Republic of Ireland international Westwood has reportedly been on the Toffees’ radar.

But Everton boss Roberto Martinez, speaking at his pre-match press conference yesterday, was asked whether Westwood was a transfer target and replied: “No, there is no truth in that one.

“I’m not going to speak about any player that is registered with another football club. We’re looking for a long-term addition for the goalkeeper position.

“It doesn’t have to be done in January.”

In a recent interview with The Star, Westwood said he is “really happy” at Hillsborough and thanked the club for helping him get his career back on track.

Owls chairman Milan Mandaric is adamant Westwood and influential centre-back Tom Lees are going no where during the January transfer window.

He stated: “We don’t want to sell any players. We are not selling a club.

“Our agenda is different. We want to take the club forward and without Keiren [Westwood] or Tom [Lees] it would be very difficult.

“We have several quality players but they are happy here.”
