Sheffield Wednesday set for Potter deal

WEDNESDAY are closing in on a deal for Darren Potter.

Manager Brian Laws hope to clinch the signing of the Wolves midfield player by next week and has been liaising closely with Molineux chief executive Jez Moxey.

Laws admitted: "It's a step closer. We are in negotiations with the player and his agent. We hope to conclude it by next week.

"We are getting clear communication from Wolves. I have spoken at length with Jez Moxey about putting a deal together; he suggested that we agree terms with the player first before we go any further."

There will be fee involved but it appears that this will not be a stumbling block for the Owls.

Sheffield derby clash date changed

Richard Hinds believes his new two-year contract is a deserved reward for his successful fightback last season

Wolves are likely to want to recoup at least the initial 250,000 that they paid Liverpool for the 24-year-old who was a hit while on loan with the Owls last season.

Laws also revealed that "a couple" of undisclosed players will be coming in to train with the club next week.

Wednesday reported back for training yesterday with an injury-free squad but without Lee Grant because his wife is due to give birth imminently.

New boys Tommy Miller and Darren Purse joined the rest of the players as they got to work on the renovated pitches at Middlewood Road.

Meanwhile, Laws has also revealed that Burnley did give a verbal indication of how much they would have been prepared to pay for Marcus Tudgay, though the amount mentioned was "derogatory" and no formal, written offer was received.

The Owls boss said: "We said right from the start that we were not interested in selling Marcus. You can understand the lad wants to play in the Premier League, but we're not a selling club and he's one of our best players.

"The best player in the world has his price - you only have to look at the 80 million paid for Ronaldo - but Burnley were nowhere near the figure we would have considered for Tudgay.
