Owls star Sam Hutchinson is just two bookings away from triggering an automatic two-match suspension.

The tough-tackling midfielder, who has established himself as a big fans favourite at Hillsborough, has collected eight yellow cards during the 2016/17 season.

Hutchinson will dodge a ban if he avoids collecting two bookings in Wednesday’s next three fixtures against Norwich City, Burton Albion and Aston Villa. The second Sunday in March is the cut-off point for 10 cautions and the threshold would then be raised to 15 until the end of the campaign.

Hutchinson, who penned a contract extension in January, has already served two suspensions, having been sent off against Bristol City and Brighton and Hove Albion.

The 27-year-old has been a key figure in the Owls’ promotion charge, impressing at centre-back and in the anchoring role in midfield. He has played 30 times this term, the same number of appearances as he managed last time around.

Speaking on the You Are The Ref Show this week, former Owls manager Gary Megson claimed Hutchinson should not change his combative style of play.

“If he changes, you haven’t got the same player because his quality is about closing down, filling gaps and making sure teams don’t get at that back four too easily,” commented Megson.

Hutchinson is expected to start against Norwich on Saturday as Carlos Carvalhal’s men look to end a run of two successive defeats. The Canaries are eighth in the table and trail sixth-placed Wednesday by six points.
