Sam Hutchinson insists the Owls must rectify their record against the Championship’s basement battlers to mount a second successive promotion challenge.

Although Wednesday secured a play-off spot and their highest-placed finish in 16 years last year, Carlos Carvalhal’s men struggled against some of the teams near the bottom of the table.

Away from Hillsborough, Charlton Athletic and Milton Keynes Dons, who succumbed to relegation, turned them over and the Owls also failed to beat the Dons and Rotherham United on home soil.

Those dropped points, allied to a sluggish start to the campaign, prevented Wednesday from finishing much closer to the automatic promotion places.

Hutchinson said: “We did well against the top teams; it was the teams at the bottom who we found it more difficult to play against.

“We lost to the likes of Charlton and MK Dons so it would make a big difference if we could turn that around this year.”

The utility ace, who is currently receiving treatment for a quad injury he sustained in their 4-0 friendly win over CD Nacional, has challenged the team to get off to a flying start.

On the opening weekend, Wednesday entertain Aston Villa followed by a trip to promotion hopefuls Norwich City.

Former Chelsea youngster Hutchinson said: “It took a while for us to settle down last year because we brought in so many players. We made a slow start to the season.

“If we can hit the ground running, then I think we will be right up there.”
