SHEFFIELD Wednesday striker Neil Mellor was today named by the Football League as the League One Player of the Month for April.

It follows his six-goal haul during the month and winning of the club’s Player of the Year title.

Owls boss Gary Megson was pipped for the Manager of the Month award by Nigel Adkins, whose Southampton side won seven out of eight games in April and stand on the brink of promotion.

Peter Beagrie, a member of the judging panel, said: “At the beginning of the month, Wednesday were hovering just above the relegation zone in 17th position.

“But Mellor’s six-goal contribution has helped navigate the Owls up the table - a safe distance, 11 points, from the drop zone.

Emma Collins, head of sponsorship with League sponsors npower, said: “Mellor has been a revelation since his loan move to Hillsborough.

“His goals have come in important matches and helped Wednesday climb up the League One table at a crucial point of the season.”

Megson was shortlisted for the manager award after the Owls won four games, drew two and lost one during April.
