Sheffield Wednesday: Prudent Carvalhal targets new Owls faces

Carvalhal has identified and informed Chansiri and his global advisors of the positions where the Owlsurgently need new blood if they are to mount a second successive promotion tilt.

Having bolstered his attack by capturing Scotland international Steven Fletcher, Carvalhal has quickly switched his attentions to bringing in defensive reinforcements.

“I know what we don’t want and I know what we want,” said Carvalhal with a wry smile on his face following Wednesday’s draw at Alfreton Town.

But the Portuguese chief accepts it is tough for Wednesday to compete in the transfer market with sides such as Newcastle United, Norwich City and Aston Villa, who are armed with massive parachute payments following their relegation from the Premier League.

He said: “The chairman and the club have our feet on the floor. We are not in the market with the clubs who have the parachute payments and the big money.

“We did very well (with recruitment) last year. We are trying to improve the team the same this year but with responsibility because we don’t want the club to disappear in a few years about money.

“Of course, there are top players that we would like to bring in like other teams but the top players, even in the Championship, are very, very expensive. The market is more difficult.

“We are looking for the best opportunities. It is why we don’t bring players in every week. We are trying to negotiate the best way that we can.”

Carvalhal has denied Wednesday have received inquiries for any of their prized assets.

He told The Star: “Absolutely nothing. Nobody has mentioned anything to me.

“The chairman has told me he doesn’t want to sell anybody and I have never had a conversation with him over selling a player.

“We are just talking about buying or loans.”
