Kenny Jackett reckons the Championship promotion race is still wide open ahead of Wolves’ trip to Sheffield Wednesday.

Wolves are 13th in the table, just five points away from a play-off spot, despite suffering five defeats on the bounce.

Nonetheless, head coach Jackett feels they are capable competing in the upper echelons of the Championship.

He said: “It shows what a good start we had and how tight the league is that we are only five points off the play-offs. I think there are some sides that are pretty consistent - Middlesbrough, Derby, Ipswich – but after that it’s pretty open still.

“The good start has helped us but we have to make sure we learn our lessons and come out as an improved Wolves unit.”

Jackett, who will be without injured trio Scott Golbourne, Ethan Ebanks-Landell and Nouha Dicko as well as the suspended Matt Doherty, thinks it’s imperative Wolves rediscover the winning habit over Christmas. He has ordered his players to “roll their sleeves up” following Saturday’s controversial defeat to Bournemouth.

“This is a vital time now,” he insisted. “It’s vital how we react as a group.

“It was disappointing to lose on Saturday and the bottom line is we got no points. We look at what we did with 10 men and perhaps how we could have done better.

“It shows, from our point of view, we know what we’ve got to do. We’ve got to keep identifying the right things, the right habits and take that into the next game.”

Jackett, who led Wolves to the League One title last season, refuses to underestimate the threat Wednesday will pose this weekend.

He said: “Wednesday have won their last two games and have a lot of power and pace.

“They are a big club and it will be a good atmosphere so we’ll have to defend and compete very well to certainly get a foothold in the game.

“Football is about confidence but you have to earn that. It’s not given to you.”
