sheffield Wednesday are pondering their striking options should England Under-21 international Connor Wickham not return to Hillsborough.

Wickham, who notched his first goal for the Owls after coming on as a substitute in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Leicester City, has rejoined parent club Sunderland following the expiry of his loan spell.

Dave Jones, the Wednesday boss, has indicated he will hold high-level talks with the Black Cats hierarchy this week as he is eager to retain the teenage forward’s services. Wickham says he would welcome the chance to extend his stay at Wednesday but the 19-year-old stated: “It’s down to the clubs.”

The problem facing the Owls is that Sunderland are short of attacking alternatives. Martin O’Neill’s men were unable to name a striker on the substitutes bench last weekend as they crashed to a 3-1 defeat at Queens Park Rangers.

If Wickham is not granted permission to comeback, Jones may look to dip back into the loan market, which closes at the end of the month. The only natural strikers at his disposal are Leroy Lita, Gary Madine and Chris Maguire. Jones has ruled out recalling Chris O’Grady from his loan stint at Barnsley.

Meanwhile, the Owls Under-21s clash at Barnsley, scheduled for yesterday, was postponed because of a frozen pitch. A new date has yet to be confirmed.
