The Sunderland loanee, a first-half replacement for the injured Ross Wallace, was clattered into by Preston goalkeeper Chris Maxwell in the second half of Saturday's Hillsborough clash.

Referee Scott Duncan, who sent off three players, including Owls ace Fernando Forestieri, pointed to the spot and Steven Fletcher duly converted from 12 yards to double the home side's lead.

But Buckley, who carried on despite being off the pitch for several minutes after receiving treatment, says he does not yet know the full extent of the knock.

“We’ll have to get a scan first," he admitted. “Obviously it’s quite sore now but hopefully not too long and I just want to get back out there.

“But touch wood it won’t be too long and I’ll get back out there playing.”

Since arriving at Hillsborough in August, Buckley game time has been limited. Seven of his nine appearances this season have come as a substitute, but he was pleased to help Wednesday record back-to-back wins.

“Of course, that’s the main thing,” he explained. “We’ve had a few injuries today, but hopefully none of them are too serious.

“But we got the three points and move on to next week.

“I’m sure there’s the depth in the squad so hopefully the players can come off the bench and keep the team just as strong.

“So that’s the main thing - the three points. We now go onto next week which will be another tough game.”
