dam Le Fondre’s move from Reading to Cardiff helps to show what Wednesday are up against in the summer transfer market.

The former Owls target is understood to have cost around £1m and his three-year deal will be commesurate with the Bluebirds’ status as a relegated Premier League club.

Ole Gunnar Solkskjaer has also hired another striker who was formerly on Wednesday’s wanted list: Manchester United’s Federico Macheda, who has been landed on a free.

Gary Megson tried to sign Le Fondre; Dave Jones was the manager when the Owls chased Macheda; now Stuart Gray is in a similar position, bidding for a striker and players in other positions against a significant number of clubs who already have strong bases in the Championship or, like Cardiff, are awash with parachute money.

But there can be astute signings to be had in the Bosman market, and Gray is confident that Milan Mandaric will do all he can to back him if transfer fee funds are necessary.

Meanwhile, Owls players Rafa Floro and Cameron Dawson have both suffered disappointment on the international stage. Floro’s Portugal were pipped by France for the right to face Brazil in the Toulon Under 20 tournament, and Dawson, an unused sub, saw England Under 19s knocked out of the European Championship by Ukraine.
