Sheffield Wednesday are set to reject Derby County’s audacious £7m bid for star striker Fernando Forestieri.

The Star understands the Rams have tabled an offer for the Argentine-born player as they look to bolster their strikeforce before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.

But the Owls, who lost 2-1 after extra time to Cambridge United in the EFL Cup last night, do not want to part with Forestieri, who notched 15 goals last season after arriving from Watford for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £3m.

When asked whether Derby have lodged a bid yesterday, Carvalhal told The Star: “I don’t know but Sheffield Wednesday is not selling any player. This is clear.

“The chairman was very clear that he won’t sell any players. We are buying not selling players.”

The 26-year-old, one of a string of senior players left out of last night’s team, played a key role in Wednesday reaching the Championship Play-Off final during the 2015/16 campaign.

Forestieri sparkled through the Owls’ pre-season programme and opened his account in the club’s Championship opener on Sunday, grabbing a late winner against newly-relegated Aston Villa.

The talented forward has previously told this newspaper he would be happy to spend the rest of his career with the club.

“What I know is Fernando is happy at the club,” added Carvalhal. “He has said he wants to stay at the club for the rest of his career.

“I don’t feel that he is unhappy. He is doing very well and the players like him a lot. The fans love him.

“We try to help him all the time. It is the same with his colleagues.”

However, Carvalhal’s team are close to strengthening their defence, having agreed an undisclosed fee with Aston Villa Joe Bennett. The left-back, who spent time on loan with the Owls last term, making four starts, underwent a medical yesterday and is set to sign a three-year contract. Bennett will become Carvalhal’s sixth summer addition.

Bennett, who started his career at Middlesbrough, made 38 appearances for Villa.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Cameron Dawson has joined League Two side Wycombe Wanderers on a seven-day emergency loan. He started their fixture against Bristol City last night.
