Stuart Gray has confirmed an interest in the Owls’ former loan star Roger Johnson.

The defender is set to return to Wolves after spending the second half of the season on loan at West Ham.

Gray told The Star: “He did well here and would be several options to have in mind, but you’ve got to have a few irons in the fire.

“When Dave Jones was here he wanted to extend Roger’s loan, and so did I after taking over but then West Ham came in, and they were paying a large chunk of his salary.”

Wolves will assess Johnson’s future before their pre-season training begins. Manager Kenny Jackett said: “Roger did very well at Sheffield, He was well thought of and at the time he went to West Ham, Sheffield were very interested (in extending the loan). That was the case with the current management as well. There has been no word from West Ham.”

Johnson has another year left on his Molineux contract.

Wednesday will have a list of centre-half potential targets after releasing Anthony Gardner, Martin Taylor and Miguel Llera, and with no certainty that Oguchi Onyewu and Glenn Loovens will stay.

Kamil Zayatte, who has missed most of this season owing to injuries, is the only senior centre half on the books who is under contract beyond this summer.

Johnson was signed on loan last September after Gardner was injured and showed impressive form. But he has made only four starts plus two appearances as a sub for West Ham.
