SHEFFIELD Wednesday will hold top-level talks next week to cement the future of assistant manager Terry Burton.

It follows apparent interest from Arsenal in Dave Jones’ right-hand man.

Although there has been no official approach from the Gunners to Hillsborough, Wednesday will want to clarify the position.

A face-to-face meeting has not been possible so far because Jones is on holiday.

All the staff will be back at work by the beginning of next week, with the players reporting back for work a few days later.

Milan Mandaric said last week that if the vacancy of Arsenal reserve-team manager was on the table for Burton then it would be the assistant boss’s decision if he was to go but the Owls did not want to lose him.

The Wednesday chief told The Star yesterday: “We are going to resolve this before the beginning of preparations for next season.

“We very much want Terry to stay; we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

“We will talk with Terry next week.”

The Owls will want their camp to be fully stable as they bid to build on promotion, and Burton is a key member of it. He is also popular for his personality and coaching ability.

Burton has worked closely with Jones for seven years, first with Cardiff and now at Hillsborough.

He was a youth player and a coach at Arsenal, who are reorganising after the retirement of Pat Rice.

Jones has kept in touch with Owls affairs by phone during his holiday, not least because there are several transfer irons in the fire.

Mandaric said: “There are a lot of things going on. There is nothing new that we can yet report, because nothing is concluded yet, but things are going positively. Our manager has been in constant touch, on a daily basis.”
