Owls boss Dave Jones has rubbished reports linking them with Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi.
The Championship club are looking to bolster their forward line before they begin their season at Queens Park Rangers on August 3.
But Jones has denied claims Wednesday are in the hunt to sign Ameobi, who is expected to be offloaded by Newcastle this summer having slipped down in the pecking order at St James’ Park. The Nigerian international has a year left to run of his contract and is thought to be earning around £22,000 a week at Newcastle.
Jones told The Star: “I don’t know where people keep getting these names from. One minute it is Kenwyne Jones and the next it is Shola Ameobi. People keep linking us with players who are at clubs with far bigger wage bills than ourselves. It is absolutely ridiculous.”
The Wednesday manager plans on giving all his squad a run-out in tonight’s pre-season friendly with Braga in Portugal. He added: “It will be a tough test but we want to keep our winning streak going.”
The Owls warm-up match with Glasgow Rangers at Hillsborough a week tomorrow will now kick-off at 8.00pm.
