Two of Wednesday’s unsung heroes have predicted there is more to come from Marco Matias following his wonder strike against Leeds United.
Midfield pair Jose Semedo and Kieran Lee heaped praise on the 26-year-old, who bagged 17 goals in Portugal’s top-flight last season.
Semedo said: “I’m not suprised with the goal Marco [Matias[ scored. He scored an amazing goal in training on Friday. It wasn’t as good as that one but it was amazing. He’s quality and will get better and better.
“He scored a lot of goals last year in a small team in Portugal and the national team are talking about him. I’m sure he will give a lot of happiness to the Sheffield Wednesday fans and be an outstanding player for us.
“We have brought in a lot of very good players but he will make a difference.”
Along with Semedo, Lee was handed his first Championship start as head coach Carlos Carvalhal freshened things up.
“I see Marco in training every day so I know he’s got that in him,” said Lee. “He caught it well and his touch over the defender was nice. He knew it was in as soon as he hit it. It was a great goal and not a bad way for him to start.
“He will score goals with his movement in behind so hopefully that’s the first of many.”
Lee claimed the draw was a “fair result”.
“We started well and put ourselves about a bit,” he said. “We shaded the first half but they came back into it in the second.”
He said he was delighted to be back in the starting line-up and believes Wednesday’s foreign contingent are gradually adapting to the demands of the Championship.
Lee said: “I think it’s a shock for all of the new ones because this league is much quicker, more physical than probably what they are used to. I think all of the lads are adapting and have started quite well.”
