Claude Dielna is a major injury doubt as Sheffield Wednesday gear up to face promotion-chasing Middlesbrough.
The Frenchman, formerly of Olympiakos, Ajaccio, Lorient and Istres, suffered a knee problem in the closing stages of Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over Millwall. Dielna was preferred at left-back to Jeremy Helan, who dropped to the substitutes bench.
Owls boss Stuart Gray said: “Claude took a knock on his knee. It’s a bit too early to say what the problem is.”
Dielna, Chris Kirkland and Jose Semedo were named in the starting line-up at The Den as Owls clinched just their second win of 2015.
There was yet again no place on the bench for transfer deadline day signing Filipe Melo. The defensive midfielder has featured just once, as a second-half substitute at Ipswich Town, since signing a three-and-a-half-year contract at Hillsborough. Silva, recruited from Portuguese side Moreirenses for an undisclosed fee, has been left out of two of Wednesday’s last three match-day squads.
Gray said: “Melo travelled with us to Millwall but unfortunately didn’t make the squad. With Semi [Semedo] coming back, I just felt I needed cover elsewhere.
“Competition is healthy so the fact Melo couldn’t get on the bench just shows we have a bit of strength in depth.”
The Owls will be searching for their first home win since Boxing Day when they host second-placed Boro on Saturday.
