Wednesday are poised to step up the search for a new central defender after ending their interest in USA international Oguchi Onyewu.
Owls chairman Milan Mandaric and head coach Stuart Gray had spoken of their desire to bring Onyewu back to Hillsborough on a full-time basis.
Negotiations have been ongoing between Wednesday and Onyewu’s representatives in recent weeks but The Star understands the two parties have failed to thrash out a deal.
Onyewu, capped 68 times by his country, joined Wednesday in the New Year following an unsuccessful spell with Queens Park Rangers.
The 32-year-old started 19 times after penning a contract until the end of the 2013/14 campaign, scoring one goal in the Owls’ FA Cup win at Rochdale.
He has recently been training with DC United.
