It’s a case of opportunity knocks at Sheffield Wednesday this week unless manager Dave Jones decides to make signing a central defender his major priority now the loan window is open again.

The long-term absence of Anthony Gardner means a vacancy at the heart of the defence and so pitches together, as challengers, the two understudies who have been watching patiently from the sidelines so far - Miguel Llera and Martin Taylor.

With the loan window re-opening tomorrow, the Owls boss was expected to be active with his likely targets being a midfield player and/or a striker.

However, the Gardner absence is likely to have had him looking at what might be available out there as a possible replacement, be that as soon as possible or a for a bit further down the line.

Wednesday, still seeking their first win, return to action on Saturday at home to Yeovil, one of the three clubs below them in The Championship. However, the Owls have no game next Tuesday - when there is a full Championship programme - because scheduled opponents Wigan Athletic start their Europa League campaign next week.
