Sheffield Wednesday are getting closer to playing in Carlos Carvalhal’s preferred style, the Portuguese has revealed.

The Owls head coach pointed to the last two games at Burnley and Bolton Wanderers as examples of his players growing into the style of play he wants to impose.

All he wants now is for the goals to flow, starting this afternoon against Fulham.

“The Burnley and Bolton matches have been much more near my style,” Carvalhal said. “We have been very aggressive when we don’t have the ball to make sure we win it back quickly.

“We were more organised but at the same time played positive football and created chances to score goals.

“I can’t say that everything was perfect but we are near what we want. What we need now is to continue with the same dynamic but start scoring some goals.”

Tuesday goalless draw was the first time Wednesday have failed to score in a game this season. But they have only managed seven goals in seven league games so far this term.

Carvalhal says the Owls must take their chances when they come against Fulham at Hillsborough today because he believes it will be difficult to create opportunities.

He said: “Fulham are different to Bolton and Burnley – they are a compact team.

“They close the lines very quickly which is why I don’t expect too many chances in this game.

“We must score the chances we create and be much more efficient. I believe we can do that.

“They are a strong opponent. They will be compact and it will not be an easy match.

“They are confident because they have won the last three matches.”
