Head coach Carlos Carvalhal is calling on Sheffield Wednesday’s fans to roar them to victory in their Championship opener against Bristol City.

The Portuguese, who claims the Owls are outsiders for promotion, is seeking to rectify their Hillsborough fortunes. Wednesday boasted one of the worst home records in the division last season, winning just a paltry five times in their own backyard. Now Carvalhal is appealing for Wednesday’s supporters to pack out Hillsborough and turn up the volume versus the league new boys.

He told The Star: “We are trying to change a lot of things. It (home form) is one of the things we must correct.

“We want more victories at home so we will try our best to change it. We want our fans to enjoy watching us at home and to put pressure on our opponents.

“We need our special fans. We want to make them happy.

“We must create a positive environment at HIllsborough. If we create that positivity, the players will answer with positive football. Our opponents must feel the power of our massive fans.”

It is the second year in a row the Robins head to the Steel City on the opening day, having triumphed 2-1 in a televised clash at Sheffield United last term. They will be backed by around 1,000 fans this Saturday, despite a section of their supporters opting to skip the fixture due to Wednesday’s controversial match-day ticket prices.

Carvalhal said: “Bristol are a very difficult opponent but our team is progressing. We feel that we are much better than a couple of weeks ago.”

Wednesday continued their major squad overhaul by capturing Charlton Athletic left-back Rhoys Wiggins for an undisclosed fee and former Marseille winger Modou Sougou on a free transfer yesterday.

Wiggins, 27, has signed a three-year contract and Senegalese international Sougou, 30, has penned a two-year deal. Their arrivals takes Wednesday’s tally of summer signings to 11.

The duo could make their debuts against Bristol City.
