Sam Hutchinson is confident Sheffield Wednesday can produce more Capital One Cup heroics when they take on Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium tonight.

More than 4,500 Owls fans will cheer Carlos Carvalhal’s troops on as they look to make it through to the semi-finals of the competition for the first time since 2002.

Wednesday have already eliminated Premier League sides Newcastle United and Arsenal from the tournament and Hutchinson sees no reason why they can’t complete a hat-trick of top-flight wins.

The 26-year-old stressed: “We have confidence going into the Stoke game and have obviously beaten Newcastle and Arsenal along the way and everyone is looking forward to it.

“It’s a massive challenge; we are the underdogs but we also believe we can cause an upset.”

The midfielder, pushing for a starting spot after serving a two-match ban, reckons there is a swagger to Wednesday’s play under Carvalhal.

“The difference between this year and last year is that now we have a bit of arrogance,” said Hutchinson. “We have different players in and believe we can play football against anyone. We believe in ourselves and have a good squad togetherness.

“Against Arsenal was how the gaffer wants us to play. We have a good balance between people who can win the ball and defend from the front.”

“Professional sportsmen need it (arrogance) as you have to go out and perform in front of a crowd,” he added. “Players like Barry Bannan and Fernando Forestieri have helped massively and Lucas Joao up top. He has given Atdhe Nuhiu a fight for his place. All around, having two players going for every position has helped everyone as we are all on our toes and don’t want to lose.”
