SHEFFIELD Wednesday have completed a double swoop by signing Watford centre half Martin Taylor before the August transfer window closed.

The deal for the defender followed the clinching of a loan move to Hillsborough for QPR striker Jay Bothroyd.

Neither is likely to be involved in the Owls’ match at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Taylor has signed a two-year contract. The Owls are paying an undisclosed fee, which may not be large as Taylor is 32 and was in the last year of his Watford contract.

Like Bothroyd he brings a wealth of experience to Hillsborough.

Taylor comes from Ashington, Jack Charlton’s home village.

He began his career at Blackburn, and had loan spells at Darlington and Stockport.

Birmimgham signed him for £1.25m in 2004. He spent time at Norwich on loan, and moved to Watford on a free in 2010. He signed a new one-year deal with the Hornets earlier this year.

Bothroyd will be on loan with the Owls until January 2.
