Stuart Gray is determined to add to his Sheffield Wednesday squad before their five-day pre-season training camp in Slovenia.
The Owls, linked with FC Groningen striker Género Zeefuik yesterday, fly out to Maribor on Saturday as they step up their preparations for the new Championship campaign.
Gray’s men will take on newly promoted Russian top flight side FC Arsenal Tula on Wednesday, July 23. The warm-up match will take place at the Ptuj City Stadium, close to the Owls’ training camp in Maribor, with a 5pm GMT kick off.
The Wednesday chief, who has already swooped to sign Keiren Westwood and Sam Hutchinson, said he is close to strengthening the options at his disposal.
“We aren’t far away,” Gray insisted. “The thing is we are fighting against other clubs who are in for these type of players. It’s down to the agents and clubs agreeing the deals.
“We need to do more business. We will get a lot of intensive work done in Slovenia. We will be doing two training sessions a day out there so the more players we can get through the door the better.”
Gray handed French trialist Achille Campion a chance to stake his claim for a full-time contract in Saturday’s friendly at York City. The 24-year-old striker, recommended to Gray by a contact, played in the first half of the Owls’ 2-0 triumph.
“He’s a boy who comes from France who has played college football in America,” said Gray. “It was a good opportunity for us to have a look at him.”
Wednesday are expected to make a final decision on Campion’s future this week.
Gray added: “We are still trying to strengthen the team. We need that little bit of quality. I want players to be pushed.”
More than 1,500 Wednesday fans, meanwhile, purchased the club’s new home kit at Owls in the Park. The kit, designed after feedback from supporters which saw a large demand for the classic blue and white stripes, is their first with new manufacturer Sondico.
