Sheffield Wednesday made a big statement of intent in the transfer market by capturing talented attacking midfielder Marco Matias for an undisclosed fee from Nacional last night.
Reports in Portugal yesterday suggested the Owls have forked out in the region of €3m (£2.2m) for Matias, who has penned a four-year deal.
It is believed Matias, a graduate of Sporting Lisbon’s youth system, recently turned down moves to Malaga and Besiktas.
It was just over a year ago Matias moved to Nacional, having plied his trade at Vitória Guimarães. Matias, thought to be a skilful forward who can be utilised on either flank, plundered 20 goals in 36 appearances last season as Nacional finished seventh in Portugal’s top division. Three of his strikes came in the Europa League and the Taça de Portugal.
Matias, capped five times at Portuguese Under-21 level, has previously enjoyed loan spells his homeland with Varzim SC, CD Fatima, Real Sport and Freamunde.
He becomes Wednesday’s fourth summer signing, joining defenders Darryl Lachman, Vincent Sasso and Jack Hunt at Hillsborough. It is hoped Matias will significantly bolster their goal-scoring departments.
The Owls had been left short on options in the wide positions following the summer exits of Jacques Maghoma and Chris Maguire.
New Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal and chairman Dejphon Chansiri will give a press conference at 2pm today.
Meanwhile, former Wednesday loanee Will Keane has joined Championship newcomers Preston North End on a season-long loan deal. The Manchester United striker spent the majority of the second half of last season on loan with the Owls, bagging three goals in 13 appearances.
