Sheffield Wednesday: Owls ace gives his backing to Carlos Carvalhal

Ross Wallace

Ross Wallace has leapt to the defence of head coach Carlos Carvalhal, insisting the Owls players have to take responsibility for the team’s inconsistent results.

The Portuguese chief’s position was questioned by some fans and media after back-to-back Championship defeats against Sheffield United and Birmingham City.

But Sunday’s comprehensive win over Leeds United eased the pressure on Carvalhal heading into the two-week international break.

Victory moved the Owls up to 12th, four points adrift of the Championship play-off positions.

Wallace told The Star: “The gaffer is going to take the brunt of the criticism because he’s the manager but it is not only down to him.

“We, as players, have to take responsibility for our performances. Once we cross that white line, we have got to go and do the damage on the pitch.”

Wide man Wallace admits the team owed the fans a strong display against Leeds following their inept Hillsborough showing versus United.

“We were gutted with the United game,” he said. “We didn’t perform the way we wanted to perform but sometimes you have to give credit to the opposition.

“Sheffield United played well on the day. These things happen in football and unfortunately we had an off day. We never really got going.

“But we played some good stuff against Leeds and that is the level we have set now.

“The boys were really happy with the way we played and are looking to keep that level of performance going now until the end of the season. Hopefully it will give us some confidence when we come back after the international break.”

Wednesday’s Under-23s go to Barnsley today. The clash takes place at 2pm on the Oakwell training pitches.
